This Smart Fortress 2012 and I have done battle several times. This is an old threat under a newer name. This client has been around for years now but under different names.

It’s near impossible to track down and punish the makers of these rouges. Smart Fortress 2012 removal is not as hard as one may think. Great instructions can be found on this Remove Smart Fortress 2012 guide. You may also want to look at this Smart Fortress 2012 guide as well.

The biggest issue most people have with this virus is you are not able to use any programs on your computer till it is removed. Almost all programs are blocked from running. Because of this some individuals will find the threat hard to remove. You will most likely not be able to install antivirus software on the computer to help you remove the threat either.

Great Tips to Make removing Smart Fortress 2012 Easier

You may be able to yse System Restore and full remove Smart Fortress 2012 in a matter of minutes. This is basically taking your computer back in time to when you were not infected with the virus. From there you can run a full virus scan to ensure everything was removed.

If the system restore does not work for you then you can most likely install an antivirus client while in safe mode with networking. This tends to work well for many people out there.

Manual removal is always an option but it will require you to stop the malware client from running before you can remove it. Once you stop a single .exe file on the system the program will most likely stop running and you can then delete the rest of the virus traces and take back your computer. While this sounds hard, it’s really rather simple.

This virus hides in the C:ProgramData\ folder. Then sort the files and folders by date. View by the most currently installled files first. Now it’s just a matter of comparing the dates to the day you got infected. Chances are there are only 1-4 files and folders around the date you were infected. Basically the folder name will not make any sense. This will be the file you need to stop from running. Re-name the files in the folder to anything you like. The virus will now no longer load and upon re-boot should not be active.

What can make things even more confusing with the name is there is a legitimate anti-virus client out there called Security Shield. It’s not uncommon for these malware makers to use a name similar to a real anti-virus client in hopes of trick the user into making a purchase.

Security Shield so far is a know clone of System Tool, Security Tool, Total security 2009. Based on those past infections we are going to assume that this client will follow suite. System Tool is the most widely spread malware client in 2010 according to RemoveVirus.org . They based this off of the amount of views they had to their malware removal guide.

The purpose of this malware is to simply trick the user into making a purchase of the false security client. At the time of this writing this malware client does not delete system files nor does it pass on sensative information to a third party. It is important to note that if a user were to make a purchase of this false security client they would be giving away their credit card information and that information would most likely be used for other ill gotten purposes.

Malware Protection is not stealing personal information like banking login’s and it does not seem that the makers of this malware are out to steal a person’s identity, just scam the user out of money which is a little less evil, but only a little.

Like most malware clients, Malware Protection blocks legitimate anti-virus clients from running and is known to show false scan results as well as bogus error messages.

As many as 670 security professionals were surveyed regarding the PCI-DSS compliance and data breaches which has reveled some interesting information.

One of the significant findings of the study was that security and PCI-DSS compliance does have a correlation and that as many as 64 percent of the organizations didn’t experience any credit card related data breach over the last couple of years. On the other hand, 38 percent of the non-PCI-DSS compliant organizations reported that no data breach took place in their organization linked to credit card data.

Despite the fact that PCI-DSS focuses on the payment industry, breaches involving non-credit card data can also be reduced through the proper utilization of compliance. According to the study, a single incident of data breach took place in case of 63 percent of the PCI compliant organizations where on the other hand five or more data breaches occurred in case of 26 percent of the non-PCI compliant organizations.

Although the study did indicate that the PCI-DSS and improved security are correlated, it was not the general sentiment articulated by the individuals who took part in the survey. Only 33 percent of them actually indicated that the costs that are linked to PCI-DSS compliance added value to their organizations.

Firefox 4 along with some of the older versions of the browser (including Firefox 3 and 3.5) have recently gone through significant level of renovation as Mozilla addresses 53 bugs of which 12 were categorized as “critical” while 9 as “major”. This was revealed on April 28 by Mozilla. A major portion of the critical issues involved system crashing and freezing while others dealt with the problem regarding large PDF files not being loaded properly in Firefox. It is to be mentioned that Firefox 4 had a serious security vulnerability in the past that exposed the Windows based systems to cyber attacks.

In a statement, Mozilla included that the developers have successfully repaired memory corruption bugs (MFSA2011-12) found in the browser which under “certain circumstances” could get corrupted. Some of these bugs could be used to run the arbitrary code, Mozilla added.

The latest version of the browser was exposed to “two crashes” due to a programming error that existed in Firefox 4 which could be exploited remotely with the intention of running harmful codes, according to Mozilla. Mozilla advisory MSFA 2011-17 also added that the WebGLES graphics libraries, which support the open source WebGL were compiled without Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) protection before they were used in Firefox’s Windows versions. This can be considered as a serious flaw since the main objective of implementing ASLR was to ensure that the addressable memory space is not being located by the cyber criminals who usually look for the memory space to execute the exploits. It would be very much possible for the raiders to compromise the operating system by bypassing the WebGLES libraries of Firefox considering the fact that both Windows Vista and Windows 7 relies on ASLR for protection.

According Mozilla, if an attacker identified an exploitable memory corruption flaw, then s/he could utilize these libraries in order to bypass ASLR on Windows Vista as well as on Windows 7, turning the flaw into exploitable which is also the case for other platforms including Windows XP.

It is to be mentioned that WebGL is an open-source extension to JavaScript that allows a developer to deliver 3D graphics content. Firefox and Google Chrome support this extension which is likely to be included in the upcoming versions of Opera and Safari. Mozilla stated that, two WebGLES related bugs were repaired in Firefox 4.0.1 which were present only in Firefox 4. The browser didn’t have WebGLES in the earlier versions.

Mozilla launched Firefox 4 on March 22. It was followed by the posting of the first build of Firefox 5 during 2nd of May and the first beta release is expected to take place on or around May 17. As far as its Web Browsers are concerned, Mozilla is currently making its way towards a six-week product cycle.

The flaws that were addressed by Adobe include vulnerabilities that were found in the Adobe’s Flash Player. That particular flaw was repaired on 15th of April. It is to be mentioned that the flaws were reported publicly for the first time on April 11th.

The recent updates for Adobe Reader 9.4.4 and Adobe Acrobat X 10.0.3 were delivered during late April that included the final elements of the repair. In its April 11th advisory, Adobe stated that critical flaw was there in the Flash Player 10.2.153.1 and also in the older versions for Linux, Macintosh, Solaris and Windows, Adobe Flash Player 10.2.156.12 and older versions for Android and the Authplay.dll component which comes along with Adobe Reader and Acrobat X (10.0.2) and previous 9.x and 10.x versions for the Macintosh and Windows operating systems.

The vulnerabilities were considered as major threats for the security of the users since cyber criminals could exploit those to take control of a system or crash it. According to Adobe, it was aware of reports claiming that such vulnerabilities were being exploited actively by the attackers. The source of such attacks was a Flash (.swf) file which was embedded in a Microsoft Excel (.xls) or Microsoft Word (.doc) file that came as attachment through e-mails.

It is to be mentioned that the updates for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader arrived in the market outside the usual cycle of patch updates of Adobe. According to the current schedule, the security updates are suppose to arrive for the users on 14th of June.

The development raised major concern among the smartphone users as many started to wonder if their privacy was compromised by the technology used in the iPhones.

In its defense, Apple stated that the file was programmed to record Wi-Fi hot spots and cell towers in the general area of iPhones but was not being used for keeping tabs on the users. The concerns regarding the privacy of the customers raised partially based on misunderstanding, the company added. It claimed that the users were not provided with sufficient education regarding the new technology, which was one of the reasons why people got confused. However, Apple also included that the files keeping one year worth of information was caused by some sort of software error, something that the company is expecting to fix within a few weeks.

According to Apple, the data helps the iPhones to figure out their locations and allows the phone to track down cell tower and hot spot signals. It is to be mentioned that these signals are stronger than the ones generated by the GPS satellites. Since the Wi-Fi signals does not cover a long distance, one being tracked by the phone means it is close to a hot spot.

Apple did not came up with any explanation regarding the use of “timestamps” which were found in the files that can link a phone to some specific cell towers and hot spots at a certain time. These timestamps are the ones that allowed the security researchers to develop maps of a phone’s movement over a year. Questions were raised regarding the information found in the data that why they were so much detailed that the researchers were able to develop maps showing the movements of a phone.

Pete Warden, one of the researchers who played a key role in developing those maps stated that it was possible for Apple to use the location related information effectively without recording the timestamps.

The mechanism works through the installation of a Trojan virus in advance which later causes the browser to redirect a user to these websites. There the user may encounter fake security alerts based on the security system which is integrated into Firefox. The fake Firefox alert will warn the user that the website s/he is attempting to access can cause harm to the system and then will recommend the surfer to install a software as a preventive measure.

If the user clicks on the button saying “Get security software”, s/he will be forwarded to another website where a so called “security” software will be offered. This software is designed not to do any good to the system. It gives the user an impression that his/her machine has got infected by malicious programs. The entire plot has been developed by cyber criminals to deceive people to take advantage of them.

If you encounter any security alert with a button saying “Get security software” then most likely it is a fake Firefox alert which also means that your system might have got infected by a Trojan already. In order to protect your system from such attacks, you need to have a reputed antivirus software installed in your machine which should be updated constantly to protect you from fake Firefox alerts and other threats.

According to Peter Kruse, a partner and security expert of CSIS Security Group, the kit is now available in the market under the name “Weyland-Yutani BOT” which is being sold for as much as $1000. New versions of the product are expected to follow for iPad and Linux. It is to be mentioned that “Weyland-Yutani BOT” is the first of its kinds which is an automated do-it-yourself kit that goes after the Apple OS X system.

Kruse stated that the kit looks completely operational which comes with an admin panel, a builder and supports encryption, features that are also found in several other DIY crimeware kits developed for PCs. Kruse also added that Weyland-Yutani BOT is designed to support Web injects and form grabbing in Firefox which is expected to be followed by Chrome and Safari. According to him, the webinjects templates are identical to the ones that were used for Zeus and [SpyEye].

The CSIS security expert expressed his concerns due to the emergence of the new crimeware tool kit considering the fact that the MacOS was not heavily targeted by Malware for years which was the case for systems that run on Windows.
